Stunning country residence offers contemporary style

Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Australian bush and set amongst the rolling hills of Whittlesea, Victoria - this stunning country property is a modern retreat designed and built by premium builder, Comdain Homes.

With its sleek cantilever roofline creating deep eaves over massive double – glazed 360-degree windows, the home takes full advantage of its lush rural surroundings and sweeping views. John Coen, Director of Comdain Homes and owner of the Whittlesea estate, custom-designed the luxury property with a country, yet contemporary feel. "We wanted a family home that was both modern and welcoming, but also fit in with the country atmosphere," explains Coen.

Set on a ’T’ shaped footprint, the unique home includes an array of carefully chosen, high-quality materials. Featuring Gyprock Perforated Plasterboard in Standard 6mm Round on the ceilings, natural timber accents both inside and outside, and the latest Colorbond roofing – the stylish family home is a seamless blend of clean architectural lines and quality finishes.

Inside the spacious home, the kitchen, dining and informal lounge make up the open-plan living area allowing for easy entertaining. Helping to keep the space warm and cosy during the cold, Victorian winters, a large log fire dominates the space making it ideal for intimate family gatherings.

For the warmer months, the alfresco entertaining area seamlessly flows from the interior open-plan space and onto the infinity pool and landscaped garden beyond. In keeping the interior and exterior visually connected, timber accents and modern furniture are used throughout keeping both areas separate but still connected.

Simple, neutral-toned furniture was chosen for the interior creating a low-maintenance and minimalistic decor, a thoughtful move by Coen, "our aim was to allow the natural environment to take centre stage rather than the interior decor, but also reflect nature with our material choice – hence the extensive use of wood," he explains.

With high ceilings, polished concrete floors and minimal furniture, the house design called for a solution to combat noise reverberation and echoes, "a key point when building the home was to ensure that we would have a solution to improve the acoustics throughout the home without spoiling the overall style", explains Coen.

This was achieved through the use of Gyprock’s Perforated Plasterboard in Standard 6mm Round for the ceilings, which created a smooth, stylish and clean design with excellent acoustic capabilities including control of both sound transmission and absorption.

In the modern kitchen, reconstituted stone bench tops that are also used in the butler’s pantry and laundry only add to the clean lines of the home’s architecture. To create a simple backdrop that did not take away from Coen’s objective of showcasing the country surrounds of the property, Gyprock Plus Plasterboard was selected for the internal linings, to open up the space and create a clean look throughout.

To achieve a timeless bathroom design, charcoal grey tiles appear from floor-to-ceiling and are lined with Gyprock Aquachek – a stable substrate for use on ceramic tiles in wet areas. Gyprock Aquachek is resistant to moisture and humidity without compromising integrity.

Overall, Coen is ecstatic with his contemporary country escape. With clever design features and the added advantage of high performance materials including insulation and hydronic heating, Whittlesea offers unique style, functionality and comfort all year round. "We love the juxtaposition of the modern house design amongst the classic country surroundings – it’s our little slice of heaven," says Coen.
