The manufacture of gypsum-based plasterboard products has been a core business for CSR since the company introduced the product into Australia in the 1940s.

The CSR Gyprock plasterboard business is one of Australia’s largest manufacturers of innovative, high quality gypsum-based products. The company has plants in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Gyprock^™ plasterboard products include versatile, economical and easily installed wall and ceiling linings. The products are suitable for many applications, including those requiring protection against water, fire and sound, and help provide attractive living and working environments. CSR also produces a wide range of accessory products to complement the high performance linings.

The company ships its gypsum from high grade deposits at Lake MacDonnell, South Australia. Gypsum Resources Australia (50% CSR) operates the gypsum mines.

Gypsum Resources Australia

Gypsum Resources Australia Ltd (50% CSR) owns and operates the largest gypsum mine in Australia at Lake MacDonnell, South Australia, and ships the raw material to factories around the coast. The other shareholder is Boral.

Rondo Building Services

Rondo Building Services (50% CSR) has been a pioneer in the design of suspended ceiling systems, steel stud plasterboard partition systems, building board and render finishing sections since 1964. With four plants across Australia – in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth – Rondo has become a market leader in Australia and New Zealand in a range of light gauge roll formed products for the building industry and is a major supplier to South East Asia. The other shareholder is Boral Ltd.

CSR history

CSR was the first company in Australia to manufacture and market plasterboard. The company entered the gypsum products industry in 1942 with the construction of a plaster mill in Sydney. The company’s first plasterboard factory opened in Sydney in 1947. In 2006 CSR acquired Fricker Ceiling Systems, leading supplier of suspended ceilings to the commercial building market segment.  In 2010 CSR strengthened its position in the commercial ceilings market with the acquisition of the businesses of Comprador Pacific (Australia) and Potters Interiors (NZ) from Tag Pacific Ltd.
