The SHE Standard

The SHE Standard is the backbone of our SHE management system. It clearly sets out the standards we require our people to meet.

The SHE Standard incorporates a continuous improvement cycle. Managers and supervisors are required to provide leadership by:

·         effectively implementing the requirements of the SHE Standard

·         setting stretch improvement goals

·         developing and sustaining a strong culture of working safely and continuous improvement

·         allocating sufficient resources to achieve the goals.

CSR’s SHE management system aligns with appropriate international, and Australian and New Zealand standards including:

·         AS/NZS 4801 and 4804 occupational health and safety standard

·         AS/NZS 14001 and ISO 14001 environmental standard

The five sections of the SHE Standard are:

1. Commitment and policy

Our SHE Policy and SHE Policy Commitments demonstrates our commitment to improving safety, health and environment performance.

2. Planning

Business units must plan to meet the SHE Policy and Commitments. To ensure that it is effective, the planning process takes into consideration:

·      identification of hazards and aspects, assessment and control of risks

·      identification, access and communication of legal and company requirements

·      setting challenging improvement targets and objectives, developing and maintaining SHE improvement plans with clearly defined actions, allocation of responsibilities and completion dates.

3. Implementation

Effective implementation will ensure that safety, health and environment hazards and aspects are identified, assessed and controlled, and the focus is maintained on critical activities. Implementation elements include:

·         communication and consultation

·         responsibilities and accountabilities

·         hazard identification, risk assessment and control

·         training

·         administration, design, contracting and purchasing

·         product supply

·         health management.

4. Measurement and evaluation

By measuring, monitoring and evaluating SHE performance, business units are able to take preventative or corrective action to improve performance. Two mechanisms are necessary to achieve this:

·         injury/incident reporting, recording and investigation and corrective action

·         audit and measurement.

5. Review and improvement

All parts of CSR are required to undertake regular reviews of performance to improve the SHE management system as part of continuously improving SHE performance.

The SHE standard also takes into account the performance standards required under our workers compensation self insurance licences.
