Deepen your understanding of how fire develops and the key factors that influence a system’s Fire Resistance Level (FRL).

This CPD explores material suitability, structural considerations and testing methods to help architects confidently specify compliant, fire‑resistant solutions.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this session, you should be able to:

  • Explain how a fire starts and describe the fundamental principles of fire behaviour in built environments.
  • Define Fire Resistance Level (FRL) and understand how it is used to classify the fire performance of building elements.
  • Identify the key factors that influence FRLs, including material properties, system design and installation conditions.
  • Recognise the role of cement sheet products as non‑combustible solutions and evaluate their suitability for various applications.
  • Understand the structural requirements that support fire resistance and how these requirements relate to building safety and compliance.
  • Describe different fire testing methods and interpret how these tests determine the performance of materials and systems.

This presentation will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects 2021:

PC 12 PRACTICE MANAGEMENT AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT

Understand how relevant building codes, standards and planning controls apply across architectural practice, including climate change implications, the principles of fire safety and barriers to universal access.

PC 39 DETAILED DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION

Understand how the integration of material selection, structural and construction systems impacts on design outcomes.

PC 46 DETAILED DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION

Understand the processes for producing project documentation that meets the requirements of the contract and procurement procedure and complies with regulatory controls, building standards, codes, and conditions of construction and planning approvals.
