Few building types ask as much of their walls and ceiling systems as healthcare. They must resist fire, block sound between sensitive spaces, withstand constant cleaning and hold up to years of hard use. Drawing on the relevant National Construction Code provisions and Australian standards, this CPD sets out the key design considerations, including fire safety, acoustics, hygiene and thermal performance, while providing guidance on how to apply them to specify lightweight wall, ceiling and facade systems.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this presentation, you should be able to:
- Recognise the unique performance and functional demands of healthcare facilities.
- Explain the role and function of lightweight solutions for internal walls and ceilings in healthcare environments.
- Understand compliance requirements for fire safety, acoustics, hygiene and thermal performance, and apply them to the specification of lightweight interior and exterior systems.
This presentation will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects 2021:
PC 24 PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPT DESIGN
Be able to prepare and analyse project development options in response to a project brief – its objectives, budget, user intent and built purpose, risk and timeframes, including environmental sustainability considerations.
PC 28 PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPT DESIGN
Be able to draw on knowledge from building sciences and technology, environmental sciences and behavioural and social sciences as part of preliminary design research and when developing the conceptual design to optimise the performance of the project.
PC 31 PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPT DESIGN
Be able to identify, analyse and integrate information relevant to environmental sustainability – such as energy and water consumption, resources depletion, waste, embodied carbon and carbon emissions – over the lifecycle of a project.
